INDIAN WELLS - Spanish-singing pop star Luis Miguel Sunday brought his Latin style and music to the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, where several thousand fans greeted him with cheers, screams and standing ovations. The sexy vocalist wooed fans of all ages as he belted out some of his top hits during his Mexico en La Piel Tour evening performance.
Although the concert started nearly a half-hour late, the audience didn't seem to mind. They jumped to their feet and waved banners saying "Luis Miguel, Coachella Valley Loves You," and "Luis, we love you" when he appeared on stage.
All Music Guide calls the 35-year-old Puerto Rico native "the most popular performer in Latin America."
He's been criticized for his "snobbishness" at concerts, but that attitude wasn't apparent Sunday.
Early in his performance Miguel walked down the steps of the stage to shake hands and accept bouquets of flowers from admiring female fans.
Males like him too.
"He's a guy with much class and style," said Joaquin Guadiana, 37, who came from San Diego to see the concert.
Carlos Garcia, 44, of Chula Vista, agrees Miguel once was a little on the snobby side, but says that's no longer true.
"His presentation on stage has changed - now he's more into his audience," said Garcia, who saw the singer in his San Diego concert two weeks ago.
Among the Latin singer's female fans were sisters Alejandra and Adriana Velasquez, who came from Mexicali for the concert.
The sisters, 25 and 22, respectively, have gone to Miguel's concerts in Mexico and San Diego since they were about 12.
"All ages love him," Adriana Velasquez said, adding the singer's fans also include her parents, grandparents and younger brother.
Lizeth Valencia, 44, of Palm Desert said she loves Miguel's voice, good looks and the fact he's bringing into his repertoire renewed versions of some older Latin favorites.
Blanca DeLeon, 38, of Indio said she and her friend Aracely Camarillo, 35, were in line at 6 a.m. the first day tickets for Miguel's concert went on sale.
"I've been a fan since he was a small boy," she said.
"I love him - he's the greatest singer in Mexico."
